What are separable hinges for casket lids?Updated 3 months ago
Hinges on caskets are typically separable for the purpose of easily removing and reinstalling the casket lid during production. These lid hinges (also called lift off hinges) are installed along with latches and top supports in the woodworking shop. Then, after moving to the finishing area, the lid is removed while applying one or more finish coats by hand or with a spray gun. Next, the lid is installed and moved to the upholstery workshop where the lid is removed again for upholstery installation and finally reassembled and ready for storage or delivery. Separable hinges are comprised of two components, the hinge base that is attached to the upper sidewall of the casket box, and the hinge stud that is attached to the casket lid. To remove the lid, simply remove one screw from the top support arm, gently tilt the lid back to about 100 to 110 degrees from open, and lift off the lid.
